Hi,

The Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS) for my 2004 JDM-spec 100 series v8 (GH-UZJ100W-GNAGK) is not the correct one.
I bought the vehicle used and later found out someone had rigged it with the sensor from another vehicle, held on with only one screw, probably because the old one had a fault and they couldn't find the part here in Kenya so rigged it with whatever they could manage. Parts are a nightmare here. Instead of the clip that the wires go onto on the vehicle, they just hardwired the sensor in, so I don't have the correct clip anymore either.

I believe that this has been sporadically causing the car to go into limp mode. If you want to read the gory details I wrote a post here:

with pictures in post # 11 here:

I didn't have the problem again for a long time after I wrote that, but this week it's come back with a vengeance. The vehicle has gone into limp mode frequently this week. Usually it is cured temporarily with an ignition on/off, but not always.

Toyota here quoted me about 400 quid for ""#78010 - Pedal Assy, Accelerator" which I believe is the whole pedal with sensor, and a wait time of around 3-6 months to get it. Yeah, thanks.

So does anyone know where I might be able to obtain just the sensor on its own, new or used, in the UK or elsewhere? Or the whole pedal assembly with sensor for cheap?

And is there anyone with a similar vehicle who could read off the part number of the sensor itself to confirm? I looked on www.toyodiy.com but it just lists a part number for the whole pedal assembly:

Thanks

If you tell me where it is exactly I will get the serial number from my 2002 v8 . I don't know if the sensors changed after the facelift (late 02) and that's what you have fitted now. eBay UK has a few breakers on that might have one. If they don't post to you I'm sure something could be worked out!

Not sure about the numbers changing post-facelift, but I googled the part number I currently have and it's from a Toyota Corolla or something (!), not even from a Land Cruiser. There's a new one for sale on eBay UK but only with the whole pedal assembly and for 380 quid, which seems a lot to me for a medal rod + sensor. Was hoping to find something secondhand. If you could find the part number written on the sensor on your vehicle that would be great. It's the sensor that's attached at the top of the accelerator pedal, the part on the far left of this picture:

Hi...I have had the same problem the last couple of years! For about a week every year it started falling in to limb mode.....had it diagn. at mr.T as APPS failure....price 550£ !!! not, then I prefer occational limp trips Where to obtain an APPS pedal sensor? (2)

This year I found a complete acc. pedal arrangement at an auto scrapyard for 80£.....I did not want to seperate the sensor from the pedal!!..so I changed it all. Works fine Where to obtain an APPS pedal sensor? (3)

I dont see any difference between my 2001 -and newer versions though!

My best guess is searching the auto scrapyards.....either it works or it does'nt .....good luck Where to obtain an APPS pedal sensor? (4)

Well, it seems my problem has been fixed. My mechanic noticed that the metal to which the sensor is attached had been bent, causing the arm of the sensor and the plastic roller that runs along the pedal arm to not go straight. When the pedal is depressed the roller runs along the rod of the pedal, but due to this misalignment it was going in an arc and not remaining perpendicular to the axis of the sensor. The sensor is of a magnetic Hall-Effect type (got that from service manual) and am told contains two rotating plates. Another technically-minded friend hypothesizes that when the one plate was being forced off-axis slightly, that was causing unexpected voltage changes, which were in turn being recognised as a sensor failure by the ECU, causing it to go into limp mode. Since he bent the metal back straight and greased the roller it has been working fine, despite the fact that the sensor is from another car. So fingers crossed, touch wood, I may not need one after all Where to obtain an APPS pedal sensor? (5)
