Easy to Follow Mushroom Growing Kit Instructions

1: Mushroom Grow Setup

  • Unpack your Grow Bag and place it in a clean, stable environment.
  • Ensure the area is free of contaminants and has a consistent temperature suitable for mushroom growth.

2: Mushroom Inoculation

  • Sanitize your hands and the needle of the syringe containing mushroom spores or liquid culture.
  • Carefully inject the liquid culture into the grain through the self-healing injection port.

3: Incubation

  • Store the bag in a dark, warm place where the temperature is consistent.
  • Avoid disturbing the bag to let the mycelium colonize the substrate fully.

4: Mixing for Fruiting

  • When colonization has overtaken at least 60% of the grain layer, break up the now white grain and mix it with the fruiting substrate. Do not puncture or cut the bag during this process.
  • Be patient, harvest is only a few weeks away!

5: Mushroom Harvest

  • Lastly, Harvest your mushrooms once they’ve fully matured, typically when the caps fully uncurl from the stems (strain dependent.)
  • Be gentle to avoid damaging the mycelium and allowing for future flushes.

6: Maintenance for Additional Crops (Flushes)

After your initial harvest, you can often stimulate subsequent flushes by maintaining optimal environmental conditions. Here’s how:

  • Keep the substrate moist: Ensuring that the substrate remains hydrated and sterile is crucial.
  • Rehydrate if necessary: After the first harvest, lightly mist the substrate or add a small amount of water if it appears dry, taking care not to over-saturate.
  • Secure the environment: Replace the top of the bag and secure it with rubber bands to maintain humidity and protect against contaminants.
  • Return to the ideal growing environment: Place the bag back in its ideal environment, monitoring humidity and temperature closely to foster additional growth.
  • Await the next harvest: With patience and proper care, you should be able to enjoy a second, third, and maybe fourth harvest. Repeat the process as necessary to maximize yield.

FAQs

Do all-in-one mushroom grow bags work? ›

Yes, you can grow mushrooms indoors using a grow bag. Grow bags provide a suitable environment for mushroom cultivation by maintaining ideal humidity levels and allowing proper air circulation. They're designed with a sterile substrate that's enriched with essential nutrients for the mushrooms to thrive.

How long do all in one mushroom grow bags last? ›

All in one mushroom grow bags: Leave in original packaging. Store your all in one grow bag in a cool and dry location. All in one grow bags can keep for up to 3 months in these conditions. There will be no need to rehydrated or sterilize the products a second time.

How long does mycelium take to grow in liquid culture? ›

Within 7 – 14 days you'll see the mycelium has 'clouded' the culture and expanded throughout; this is aided with semi-regular mixing/shaking. This can be achieved by use of a magnetic stirrer, a bolt in the bottom or just swirling by hand. Things you'll need: AirPort Jar – Here is my guide on how to make them.

What is the liquid in my mushroom grow bag? ›

Moisture in the bag is completely normal. The mushroom mycelium (the white “mushroom roots” that cover the grow block) is alive and there is a cycle of evaporation and condensation in the kit.

Where is the best place to put a mushroom grow bag? ›

While this can be good, airflow is also important and small enclosed spaces can cause your mushrooms to suffer from lack of oxygen. We recommend placing your grow kit on your kitchen bench, out of direct sunlight.

How many times can you use a mushroom grow kit? ›

Expect to grow: 2-3 harvests of mushrooms / 150g - 300g

The first flush will always be the biggest. We've had some customers grow up to 4 flushes of mushrooms from our kits but on average you'll get 2 harvests. Once the kit has run out of nutrients and water it will be "spent" and won't produce any more mushrooms.

Should I shake my mushroom grow bag? ›

You can shake up your mushroom spawn bag when the mycelium has colonized about 40–50 percent of the spawn grain. As mentioned previously, this gives access to non-colonized patches of mycelium. You'll be surprised by how much this simple 30-second action can help your yield.

Do mushroom grow kits keep producing? ›

Are mushroom growing kits reusable? Mushroom kits are not reusable, but most of them produce at least 2 harvests' worth of mushrooms. This means that you can get multiple harvests out of a single kit before needing to replace it.

Do mushroom grow kits need to be refrigerated? ›

If you are looking at storing a kit we recommend selecting a White Oyster or Lion's Mane kit as these varieties can be stored for a couple of months. Most mushroom kits will store for 3-6 months in the fridge if necessary. To store your kit, keep it in the fridge.

What happens if you don't shake liquid culture? ›

Bacterial liquid cultures should be shaken always (but not too vigorously), in order to ensure aeration and oxygen and nutrient availability as well as to avoid bacterial settlement on the flask bottom which would result in cell death from the lack of nutrient availability.

How often do I stir my liquid culture? ›

There are several opinions on this, but generally growers recommend swirling, stirring or shaking your jar once a day. If you have a very slow-growing strain, you may only need to shake it every second day when you see a clump or cloud of mycelium forming instead of small strands.

What does a healthy liquid culture look like? ›

A good liquid culture will often be a tiny bit cloudy and then clear up. This is because the bacteria starts to grow a tiny bit but the mycelium is so far ahead that it scours the liquid culture of bacteria and particulates and then dominates it (mycelium has been fighting bacteria like this for millions of years).

Is my mushroom bag ready to fruit? ›

Your spawn is ready to use when the bag is completely white with mycelium.

Do mushroom bags need air? ›

The filter allows for the mushroom cultures inside the bag to receive fresh air without passing contaminants like mold spores and bacteria. Without fresh air, the mushroom culture would eventually stop growing, but if the bag were just left open after sterilization, contaminates would quickly take over.

What does mold look like in a mushroom grow bag? ›

Cobweb mould looks like, you guessed it, cobwebs! It's fine a wispy or fluffy and a very light grey. It can be easily confused with mushroom mycelium except for its colour. Mycelium is bright white whereas cobweb mould is more grey.

How good are mushroom grow bags? ›

The mushroom grow bag kit exceeded my expectations. Its simplicity made the cultivation process effortless, yielding abundant, high-quality mushrooms. The clear instructions were beginner-friendly, and the results were impressive. I highly recommend this kit to anyone interested in home mushroom cultivation.

When to break up all in one bag? ›

When the mycelium has grown three to four inches outward from the point of injection, carefully massage the bag to break up the colonized substrate and mix it into the uncolonized substrate. This will dramatically speed up the colonization process.

How much does a mushroom bag yield? ›

While some growers report harvests of 10-15 grams of dried mushrooms per pound of substrate in these bags, others might achieve less, often from significant side pinning, and especially in the case of contamination or suboptimal growing conditions.
