After growing, harvest, and eating your delicious Back to the Roots organic oyster mushrooms, you may be wondering - “what in the world do I do now!?” There are a bunch of awesome ways to reuse your mushroom substrate block (the bag of organic matter that your mushrooms grew from).

1. Try to grow more mushrooms!
Test out if you’re a real mushroom guru by trying to grow a bonus crop from the very same kit! Repeat the setup instructions on the other side of your substrate bag and try to get even more delicious ‘shrooms from your kit!

2. Add it to your garden!
The organic matter in your substrate block makes an amazing soil amendment for your other plants. Potted plants or your backyard garden will love the extra nutrients - simply crumble up the block and mix it into the top 2” of soil for a nutrient boost!

3. Get creative - make it a sculpture!
Feeling crafty? Your substrate block can last forever! By combining a couple of simple household ingredients, you can create your very own mushroom clay!

You’ll need:

  • Your mushroom substrate
  • Craft Glue
  • Cornstarch

A. Combine equal parts substrate, glue, and cornstarch in a large mixing bowl (for example, 1 cup substrate, 1 cup glue, 1 cup cornstarch).
B. Knead the mixture until ingredients are well-combined and the “clay” becomes stiff.
C. Form the clay into whatever shape your heart desires!
D. When your clay is set, put it in an airtight container to let it dry for the next 1-2 days. Alternatively, place in your oven on low heat (200 degrees) for 1 hour to speed drying time.
