Why It Works

  • Cranberry cordial and grapefruit juice give the drink a tart, refreshing taste and the prettiest blush color.
  • Warm spice notes and citrus make it holiday-worthy.

A sparkling co*cktail is the perfect drink for holiday gatherings. They’re festive, spritzy, and simple to make. If you’re making a co*cktail with sparkling wine, a bit of juice, and some spirits, you’re riffing on the classic French 75 (made with gin and lemon juice).

A Minnesota Good-Bye (Cranberry French 75) Recipe (2)

Here’s a tart and blushing variation from Nathaniel Smith of Spoon and Stable in Minneapolis. It requires a little more effort, but it hits all the right holiday notes: warm spices, like star anise, cinnamon, and clove; fragrant citrus peels; and simmered tangy cranberries, with a little dry Cava to perk it all up. You'll start by making an easy homemade cranberry cordial, which can be batched up and stored in the fridge for several weeks. Toasting the spices for the cordial helps bring out their flavors, and the mix balances sugar with bright lime and the popped berries.

The mixed co*cktail can be pre-batched, too: You'll measure out gin and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, add the cranberry elixir, then stash it in your fridge before your guests arrive. Each ice-filled glass gets a little of the co*cktail mix, a little of the bubbly, and, if you want to get extra fancy, a little cranberry garnish on top.

The name, says Smith, refers to a local custom: "A Minnesota good-bye is a standoff in manners; basically, no one can leave first for fear of being rude. It's annoying." But, he adds, "during the holidays, it's welcome, to spend those last few minutes with cousins, a few more hugs with family, making plans with friends. This co*cktail is for celebrating, and taking those extra few minutes with loved ones."

Also try these festive sparkling co*cktail riffs: a Salzburg 75, Silver Daisy, or Bellisimo Aceto.

FAQs

What is the difference between Tom Collins and French 75? ›

It is basically a Tom Collins with champagne instead of soda water (yes please). The proportions of gin, lemon and sugar are less than they are in a Tom Collins, because we're adding more booze in the form of Champagne, but the ratios are the same.

What goes with French 75 co*cktail? ›

First add the lemon, the gin (which must be very dry, for example a London Dry Gin), and then top up with the Cava. This co*cktail was created at Harry's Bar in Paris. These days many barmen add a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint. Food pairing: skewers of griddled prawns, smoked salmon, turmeric roasted cauliflower.

What drink is made of gin and Champagne? ›

The French 75 is named for the fast-firing 75 millimeter field gun that was utilized by the French during World War One. Consisting of gin, fresh lemon juice, sugar and Champagne, the drink is a lot friendlier than the name implies. Like many classic drinks, the French 75's origin is mired in mystery and debate.

Is French 75 a New Orleans drink? ›

The original version of this drink, though, hails from New Orleans and packs a bit less of a boozy punch. It swaps gin for soft, ever so slightly sweet Cognac, and it's utterly delicious.

What's the best champagne for a French 75? ›

So which Champagne do you go for? In Jim Meehan's Bartender's Manual, sommelier Jordan Salcito recommends a 100% Pinot Noir (Blanc de Noirs) Champagne for a French 75, as it has the requisite body and robustness to stand up to the citrus.

What is a substitute for simple syrup in French 75? ›

Instead of using simple syrup for your French 75 opt for a syrup with a little more pizzaz. A gomme arabic-based syrup adds weight and body, or opt for an oleo-saccharum for an extra lemony kick.

Is a French 75 better with cognac or gin? ›

You'll see most modern variations made with dry gin, as is ours below, but cognac has its fair share of proponents and makes a toastier, richer version of the drink. Others may cut the gin with a bit of absinthe or add a few dashes of bitters to give their French 75 recipe an herbal twist.

Can you order a French 75 at a bar? ›

Even though French 75s seem admittedly fancy, almost any bar can make one, even if they have to substitute Prosecco or another type of sparkling wine for the traditional Champagne. This one definitely has the potential to become your new go-to drink.

Why is the drink called French 75? ›

Inspiration behind the name

This noble co*cktail is named after the French 75-millimeter light field gun which due to its portability and rate of fire was the mainstay of the French army during the First World War (1914 to 1918).

Tom Collins co*cktails taste like grown-up lemonade.
